We are now in the middle of developing strategic concepts. The important milestones for this period will be Hungary’s EU presidency during the first half of 2011 and the debate on the post-2013 future of the Common Agricultural Policy. The conclusions of the discussions will, we hope, help us to finalize our strategic concepts and to coordinate Hungary’s rural and agricultural policy with the CAP.

This booklet describes the major events of the crisis-hit Hungarian agribusiness in 2009, gives an account of EU and national subsidies, and provides an overall picture of Hungary’s place and role in the European Union. Additionally, it depicts the results and problems of crop production, animal husbandry, forestry and game management.

Unlike in previous years, but in line with the rural development strategy of the new government, the booklet discusses in detail the relationship between agriculture and natural environment and the issues of environmental protection and agri-environmental management. As well as providing an introduction to our food industry, the booklet covers the special features of animal/crop hygiene and food safety and the performance indicators of agricultural foreign trade.
