APPLE Malus niedzwetskyana (Endangered) is found in Afghanistan, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It is an extremely rare wild relative of domesticated cultivars, making it an internationally important genetic resource. With its distinctive red flesh, thought to have cancer fighting properties, this apple is easily recognisable but highly threatened. PISTACHIO Pistacia vera (Near Threatened) is found in the wild in Afghanistan, Iran and Turkmenistan. It is mainly threatened by fruit collection and grazing. In Kazakhstan the pistachio is known by local people as the “tree of life” due to its health giving properties. Photo: G.Lazkov
