Under the SECO-funded GQSP Phase II project, UNIDO in partnership with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) and the Southern African Essential Oils Producers Association (SAEOPA) successfully hosted the 3rd South African Conference on Essential and Vegetable Oils conference, at the South African National Botanical Gardens in Pretoria from 25-26 July 2024. Dr Elsie Meintjies from UNIDO, Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP-SA) was a splendid programme director.

Under the theme “Local to Global; East or West, Home is Best,” the conference focused on the critical transition from local production to successfully entering global markets, underscoring the importance of valuing and adding value to our local resources, knowledge, and expertise, while embracing the opportunities and addressing new challenges in today’s global landscape. The conference also served as a call to action for South African producers to harness their unique strengths, while positioning themselves competitively in the global market. The conference brought together 200 oil producers and stakeholders from Southern Africa. The event showcased innovative trends in the global marketplace, highlighting various applications for essential and vegetable oils, and addressed critical issues faced by the industry.
